Growing Conditions
Oda was one of the new-wave pioneering wineries in Samegrelo which started to popularise local grapes after the demise of winemaking in the 19th century due to fungal disease and the rule of the Soviet government. Thanks to wineries such as Oda, Samegrelo has now become a thriving vine-growing and winemaking region again. The grapes were harvested from the family-based organic vineyards in the village of Bandza (Martvili), Samegrelo region, Western Georgia. The small 0.25ha’s vineyard was planted in the late 1970s and is cared for using organic treatment (though not certified). The soil type is alluvial with limestone content.
Harvest
The Ojaleshi harvest in Samegrelo was one of the oldest in the world and the oldest in Georgia. Farmers in historic times picked the grapes right after the first frost. Nowadays though due to climate change, harvesting takes place around the end of October (24th this year) when the sugar levels in the grapes reach 22-22.5 brix.
Bottling
Bottling takes place after 7 months
Winemaking
The grapes are pressed, no maceration takes place, and the wine waits until spontaneous fermentation with the natural yeasts occurs. The finished wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks (400 litres). No sulphites are added, the wine is not filtered and no additives are used. Winemaker, Keto Ninidze, makes the wine “with the crowd of the women from Martvili”.
Aging
The wine is fermented and aged naturally without skins.
