Growing Conditions

Oda was one of the new-wave pioneering wineries in Samegrelo which started to popularise local grapes after the demise of winemaking in the 19th century due to fungal disease and the rule of the Soviet government. Thanks to wineries such as Oda, Samegrelo has now become a thriving vine-growing and winemaking region again. The grapes were harvested from the family-based organic vineyards in the village of Orbeli (Tsageri), Lechkhumi region, North-Western Georgia. The small 0.3ha rocky south-east vineyard sits at an altitude of 750m.a.s.l. and is home to vines around 70+ years old (renewed from time to time).

Harvest

Winemaking

The grapes are pressed and the wine waits until spontaneous fermentation with the natural yeasts occurs. It is fermented and aged on 40 % skins in stainless steel tanks (700 litres). No sulphites are added, the wine is not filtered and no additives are used. Winemaker, Keto Ninidze, makes the wine “with the crowd of the women from Martvili”.
